History of Ranakpur
The Jain community had always enjoyed the patronage of the
ruling family of Mewar. In the 15th century, Rana Kumbha of
Mewar gave a large stretch of land in a quiet and picturesque
valley, deep in the Aravalis to the Jains. This area came to
be known as Ranakpur. Ranakpur is known for its famous Jain
Temples. The Ranakpur Jain Temple were built under the reign
of Rana Kumbha in the 15th century AD. The Ranakpur Jain
temples is one of the most beautiful Jain temple. An enormous
basement of this temple covers 48,000 square feet. There are
four subsidiary shrines, twenty four pillared halls. The total
number of columns is 1444, all of which are intricately
carved, no two being alike. These temples are about 400 years
old and even today these temples are well preserved in a
perfect condition.
Tourist Attraction in Ranakpur
The main tourist attraction in Ranakpur are the Ranakpur Jain Temples.
The Ranakpur Jain temples were built under the reign of Rana
Kumbha in the 15th century AD. Each temple provides an insight
into the rich temple architecture of the medieval times. The
most important temple is dedicated to Rishabhji. An enormous
basement of this temple covers 48,000 square feet. The Rankpur
Jain temples covers an area of 4500 square yards. Chaumukha,
the central four-faced temple houses an idol of Jain
Tirthankara Adinath. Rising to three stories, the temple has
four small shrines with 80 spires supported by 420 columns.
There are four subsidiary shrines, 24 pillared halls and in
all 1444 columns. Each of the column are intricately carved
and decorated with most elaborate sculptures and figures, no
two being alike. Facing the main temple are two temples
dedicated to Parasvanath and Neminath. The carving on these
temples bear resemblance to those of Khajuraho.
